Default External HD keeps telling me to format when accessed

Hi all.

I recently started having problems with my external hard drive. It's a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500GB. When I try to access the drive from the My Computer folder, it says that the path is invalid and that I must format it. I've checked the device manager and it shows that it is working fine however. The only thing I could think that might have caused this is that I saved an image file directly to the external HD instead of saving it to my desktop and transfering it.

I think I migh format it anyway since I don't have anything important on it but I've heard that even if you do format it, it still may not work. I don't have my warranty on it anymore so I can't exchange it.

If you need any clearifcation, please ask. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.
