Default Is there a maximum length for ethernet cables

Hi, I was wondering whats the max length for an Ethernet cable before it needs a booster signal?. Reason I ask is I just "borrowed 1000ft of cheap cable from work and ran a cable from the router to my computer. Just wanted to know if what I am using is too long or well within its capabilities. I'm using about 5 m of cable I guess, its cheap and has only 1 layer of insulation if that makes any difference.

Thanks Jon

Yup, you can go about 300ft (100m), if you want to go longer then that you should/will need to use a repeater.

Jon
So you are going to cut the cable so it's only 5-7m correct?

Remember while cutting the cable to give yourself 3-4 meters of moving space.
