Default big problem

i download alot of music videos. just something i been doing since june. i had 515 in total before i defragmented my hard drive today for the first time and they're all gone. they took up 29 gigs in total but my used hard drive space hasnt dropped. so i went to search to try to find some of the file names and nothing. i made a folder named "music and vids" when i had the videos and the only thing thats left is the folder. when i open it, it takes like 10 seconds to open but then its empty. i even moved a file from another folder to the "music and vids" folder and when i opened it, it was still empty. and i going to have to do a system restore? please help.

It doesn't sound too promising. Defragmenting hard drives is really quite safe, so I don't know what has happened in your case. Try using System Restore, if that doesn't recover them you can always undo the system restore and revert to the newer "messed up" version.

The fact that it takes so long to open suggest real corruption in the folder, have you tried checking the drive for errors???

well, right now i cant do much because if i start up my computer i get a bacl screen that says im missing some sort of dll file. so when i try to put in the boot disks, it wont let me finish because it says that it couldnt copy a bunch of bmp files. one of them looks like this... program files\hewlett-packard\HP Organize\bin\theme.hp.green1\8x6-FullBG.bmp. couldn it be that my hard drive is just damaged and i may need a new one?

Probably, it sounds like it's corrupting bit by bit. If I were you I'd try and use a dos boot disk to get off any files you need before it totally corrupts, then look at getting a new one.

At what point did your computer stop loading? Was is after you tried System restore or did it do that without any intervention on your part?

when it was at 69% of the reformat process, that error msg popped up and then it stopped at 69%. so i have to manually turn off my computer. i think im going to get a new hard drive. if i have to, can i just pop it in and try to put these boot disks in again? please help, im without my pc for almost a week.
