Default Javascript HTML?

I'm doing a project for a class and I had this idea. Basically to help the guy I'm making the site for update it more easily, I was thinking somehow having javascript read a file then enter the code. In other words, have the wine name, price, and description in a file, then the JS puts in the formatting codes and all. Yes, I'm working for a local wine company

The more I think about it, the more I begin to wonder if I'm trying too hard... However, I am curious how this is done. Sometime I'll probably pull out my old javascript files and skim over them. I know I did some stuff regarding pulling information from files, but I think it was almost always displayed as text, not entered as code...
