Exclamation after building pc...problem.

Hello
i just finished installing my new custom computer. So, i have 2 sata hard drives (from my dell, which i transfered to my new pc). On the first hard drive i have 2 partitions. one for win xp and the other partition for win vista. When i boot the pc i get the the dual boot screen option. So select win vista and my computer restarts by itself. I select win xp and in the log on screen it says that i have to activate windows (which was already activated) when i get this message my keyboard and mouse dont work.
Do i have to reformat my hard drive everytime i use it with a different motherboard and cpu?
These are the specs of my new pc:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L motherboard
2.5 gig of ram
7600gt video card

My other pc was a dell dimension e510

Both XP and Vista have to be reinstalled fresh for the new system. You don't allways have to wipe a drive totally but use the installer for each to delete the prior installations for detection and hardware profiles needed for the new. Once you have a major hardware change Windows has to be reactivated or simply installed fresh especially when drives are moved into a totally different system.

On the new build here when the first board quit and was replaced with the identical make and model Vista saw "your copy of Windows may be counterfeit" due to the date and manufacture difference and maybe the serial number of the second board. A call to MS saw Vista reactivated. XP was simply reinstalled.

The one option to rescue files prior to reformatting the two existing partitions would be to use a live for cd Linux distro like Knoppix or ubuntu that can readily access both partitions as well as both hard drives. Since it loads from a cd-r it is a self contained OS that can see onto MS partitions.

You could use the method outlined in one old 2004 artiicle to copy files from one to the other for safe keeping until one version is up and running. Have a cd wirter on another system? Take a look at the article seen at http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/

Running multiple drives here I have one set aside for storage for both XP and Vista since I can boot either version and have ready access. The one ide and two sata drives were 3 of the 4 used in the last build where the second sata used for storage and backup never saw a change since no OS was placed there. I keep a few copies of Knoppix as well as other live distros onhand for that one chance where?
