Imagine that you go out to buy groceries or whatever and leave your computer on(but blocked with password login) in your room.
Imagine your roommates are some sneaky bastards, Is there any way to configure XP to record the password tries that were entered at any time? also, is it possible to limit the number of tries when entering the password in the login screen? for example: you limit the number of tries to 3, if all the tries fail then the computer blocks itself for say 30 minutes of whatever, then when you come back from buying groceries you can check if someone tried to get into your system and what wrong passwords they entered. what do you think? is any of this possible with XP? |

what you want to know is most likely against forum rules....what you are looking for is policy that will not allow anymore attempts after 3 failures. You would have to make your own group policy on the local machine to accomplish this. As for keystroke logging, that probably won't be discussed here.

Hmm, when you get into key-logging you delve into a whole new world of nasty. I know Debian will tell you how many times a wrong password has been entered.
If you're feeling adventurous, you could assign a group policy to lockdown the computer if too many wrong passwords are entered. We use one at work. Actually, I though XP already had that built-in. You can just turn off the power and fire it back up again.

i'm not asking for a keylogger program, all I'm asking is if it's possible for XP to record the wrong passwords attempts entered, just like many people record their email passwords, credit card PINs, bank info, etc.. in their PC, what's the big deal.
I already configured XP to allow a maximum of 3 attempts when entering the password and to block itself for 30 minutes, all I want to know is what wrong passwords someone else put in to get the system blocked. |
