Default Laptop grinding to a halt

Sorry, not sure if this is the best section to post the following in:

My Toshiba laptop which is 1.5 years old has suddenly decided to grind to a halt.

The following has only happened in the last few days. It is taking 15 minutes to boot up. Applications like Word, IE, Outlook Express, Excel etc are taking several minutes to open each, however once open they perform OK albeit slowly, for example I can browse websites although if I open another tab then it takes minutes to open. Same problem with Windows, eg Control Panel window takes a minute to open and then the icons gradually appear.

If I try to do 2 things at once, eg open Word and Internet Explorer at the same time then laptop grinds to a halt and it can take 5 minutes for applications to load.

The problem therefore seems to be more with opening and closing programmes/applications as once they are open they work (although some are slow).

Have run defrag which took over 24 hours to complete even though disc was only 14% fragmented. Have also run Antivirus (norton), windows updates, Spyware Doctor, ccleaner, Spybot etc. All are clean.

Laptop has 1gig RAM, Intel CPU T2400@1.83Ghz. Hard drive has 111gig with 78 gig free.

Any suggestions as to what is causing my laptop to run at a snail's pace? Is it a virus which I cannot detect? Is it a processor problem? Is it a memory problem?

Any help or advice would be appreciated, as I am starting to think that this might be the end of my laptop.
