Webroot Window Washer

I bought the 'Washer' a 6-8 months back and installed it under my XP Admin login. But when I went to my wife's login (also an Admin login), it was not visible on her side--therefore unuseable.

I spent considerable time trying to make it useable under her login to no avail.

I contacted Webroot support and filed a report several months ago and got the promise of return information. Subsequently, they have completely ignored my issue. There are also no upgrades available for the product.

So I'll ask the experts, has anyone had experience with this login/Washer issue?

When installing any program on a system with multiple accounts you select the "anyone who uses this machine" option during the installation instead of the for one or another admin(specific user name) in order to see it available to all users. You installed the Webroot program there for a specific account limiting access to it. You would now have to uninstall it and reinstall for all users of that machine.

I have just fiished trying to re-install the software and there was no 'anyone' option as you suggested there might be.

I have been trying Webroot again -- don't expect much.

When trying Webroot's Spysweeper here I ended up dumping that program entirely since it required you buy the retail version to fix anything. For clearing browser histories and all "cookies" and other offline content there are some good freewares available that see far less software glitches especially on multiple accounts. I know it can be annoying to pay out the $30 or so retail and find something free works better.

Evidence Nuker is one freeware speicifically geared for clearing out the IE traces found at http://www.evidencenuker.com/ Another combination program called the "crap cleaner" known as CCleaner will clean the IE history along with finding and removing now useless temp folders to free up drive space. http://www.ccleaner.com/

I use CCleaner, it's very good. It also cleans temporary files for just about any other common program you might have installed. It also has tools for removing faulty registry keys and uninstalling programs.

For cleaning the registry itself I generally use RegCleaner or RegSeeker since those are a little more advanced there. RegCleaner opens up to a main window showing all non MS programs installed and can even be used to spot adwares since you either see new or old next to each main reg key.

When something is left in there by an uninstaller you'll know with one look. It also has an automatic registry cleanup tool. That can hamper a fresh install at times when something is still left there. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

RegSeeker is a slightly different kind of registry tool besides a cleaner since it can locate and remove one specific value you know and even drivers by name from the system32 foilder in the Windows directory. http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

The main problem seen there is no "for anyone" option for general application. By having it installed for one user it becomes unavailable to other user accounts other then the user specified. The software writers assume there is only one administrator.

You guys have given me several new things to look at. I think it's best if I just drop Webroot and forget they even exist.

It's really too bad that there is absolutely no assistance available from many of these manufacturers. Even their website FYI files are frequently nearly useless.

I dropped them fast here some time back when going to look at various adware and spyware temovers. Sorry you had to pay retail to see how good they are not there. But there are other great freewares you can consider for antivirus, adware/spyware removers, and even some good free firewall programs.

The top four antivirus programs used are Grisoft's AVG free 7.5, Kaspersky, Win AntiVIR, and often heard Avast. AVG gets the top rating here.

For adware/spyware protection Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 is now available. Another more recent program is Spyware Terminator with a mild form of firewall built into that. Spybot Search & Destroy is an older freeware heard about. Spyware Blaster not worh the time and effort when tested.

The two top freewares for personal firewalls are Commodo and Jetico Personal Firewall.
