You can get much more for your money by building it yourself. You will save at least a couple of hundred on a simple build, and a couple of thousand on an extreme build by doing it yourself.

^what paratwa said.

Building your own system is very easy. Many people think it's only for the super nerdy, but so long as you have the eight basic components, you're in the clear.

Building is usually a good idea for mild gaming machines and up. However, if you're just after a budget household computer than a prebuilt one will do fine.

$600-700 Budget...

Intel E4500 $128
GIGABYTE GA-P31-DS3L $79
CORSAIR XMS2 (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 $96 MIR$40
MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC GeForce 8600GTS 256MB $150 MIR$20
Seagate Barracuda 250GB ST3250410AS $70
SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner, LightScribe SATA SH-S183L $30
Rosewill RP500-2 ATX12V v2.01 500W Power Supply $45
COOLER MASTER CAVALIER 3 CAV-T03-UK $60 MIR $20
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium OEM $112

Total $770 MIR $80 w/o shipping.
If you afraid of MIR not working. Then just use a cheaper case like COOLER MASTER Elite 330, cheap RAM like ADATA
