i was fiddling with my lappy today and found something odd: my geforce 7600 gpu is running DX10, according to PC Wizard 2007. I thought that wasnt possible, that only 8000 series cards could run DX10. perhaps PC Wizard is confused or something... anyone know for sure?

If you are seeing DX10 that means you are running Vista not XP since DX10 is included in the new version. Without a DX10 compatible card you simply won't see any the enhancements in new version put to use.

Vista comes with DX10 in it already. That's why PC Wizard is indicating it being present. Unlike previous versions seeing a separate DX available for download Direct X will no longer be a separate item from Windows in Vista and all coming versions. It is now part of the OS itself.

For DX11 you'll have to wait until 2010 when the next version of Windows for the desktop should be out. Direct X is nothing more then two sets of drivers with one for 3D rendering and the other for specisal effects in audio. With a Creative Sound Blaster in Vista you now see OpenAL instead of the well known EAX used for audio effects there.

As others have said, Vista comes with DX10 installed, no matter what card you have. However thats only at the software level, your hardware still doesn't support it.

A DX10 compatible card still supports DX10. What most don't seem to comprehend in too many ways is that the latest direct x isn't anything revolutionary in development biut a simply update now incorporated into Windows so you have to upgrade in order to use it. By the time the DX10 requirements are seen on all new cards the next version of Windows will already be out.
