integrated graphics and video card question

I have a Compaq Presario SR1923WM which shares its graphics with the memory. Thus, I only have 448 mb in the desktop. I'm already considering upgrading my computer to 2 gb, and I was wondering if i can also upgrade my graphics card.

I looked up in the specifications, and it says it has a PCI Express x16 slot available. I was wondering how I would be able to get the computer to read the new graphics card and not the integrated graphics?

The integrated graphics can be disabled in the BIOS.

sorry for this, but I'm a computer newb. How do I go on about disabling in the BIOS? I never used BIOS before.

When you first turn on your PC, you should see the POST screen, it might tell you on this screen which button to push to enter the BIOS, Usually the key is Delete, one of the F keys (F2,F3), or escape. Once in the BIOS, search around for the option to disable onboard video.

This is the way I did it:
1) uninstall your video driver from the "Add or Remove Programs" (everything will look out of resolution)

2) Turn off your PC, install your new video card in the pci-express slot you mentioned, and plug your monitor to the new card.

3) Once in windows, install your video card drivers from the CD it comes with.

4) Everything should look back to normal resolution

5) Then as m0nk3ys1ms mentioned, go to your BIOS by following hermeslyre steps and somewhere in there should be an option that lets you change the main video signal, change it from Integrated to PCI-E.

My monitor wont fit in the back of my graphics card? :S WFT!?! its dvi x2 and a tv out... dont tell me i need a stupid ****ing HD tv or some shit to play this thing? =S i just spent 90 quid on this. :'(

On your first question, you would plug the monitor into the new card and that should automatically set the PCI-E card to the primary output.

Now as for your current problem, it sounds like you have a VGA cable for your monitor and the video card has two DVI ports. They sell adapters for a few bucks that convert DVI to VGA that you may need, however most video cards come with at least one adapter.
