its not that games can't be played on a quad core, its that games don't take advantage of having quad cores.
At the moment there are a few games that will use both cores in a dual core system, in a quad core system they would only use two of the cores. Most games will still only use a single core of the system.
This is why currently its probably just as good to buy a dual core processor as a quad core if your building a gaming rig. In the future games will be created to use more of the cores in the systems, I believe Alan Wake is one such game thats being touted as using up to 4 cores
