If you do a 'repair' of XP then I believe your documents are safe. Re-installing XP over a previous installation you will lose everything though. If I were you, save a hard copy of your files on a cd first. Also, wy are you reinstalling? If your having issues a system restore may be the better alternative.

Backup your documents to another partition, independent hard drive, external hard drive, USB flash drive, or CD/DVD.

Transfer your files into a seperate partition and reinstall Windows on the C: partition. Do you have another partition besides Windows on your hard drive?

Start>Right click my computer>manage> Storage> Disk Management (local)

This will tell you all about any storage media installed including CD/DVD drives. It will also show the partition break down for any drives that may be partitioned.

You can also manually find it in c:\windows\system32\Diskmgmt
