Default For musicians (Guitar port/cool edit 2.1 question)

I dont know where to stick this, so laugh at me if its the wrong category...

anyway,

Im looking at getting a guitarport for my computer to do some light recording and such using Cool Edit 2.1 (I think its the same thing as adobe audition now) but wanted to make sure the program and the port will play kindly together. Also, Cool edit has some decent effects built in, but I wanted to know of any programs that you can download to act as digital effects pedals and such or amp mods?

Thanks!
