Default problem with laptop speakers

i just recieved a laptop from my mom, its not new, i think it is like 3 or 4 years old, it has the service pack 1a disk with it, so its somewhat older. anyways, my problem is, when i close the monitor, or when it hibernates, and then i wake the computer back up, my speakers do not work. its like when it restarts the drivers and stuff after it has been hibernating, it does not load the speaker driver. i just re-installed windows a week ago, for another problem, and thought that would help this problem but it didnt. any ideas as to what it could be?
