Well you could setup just a remote desktop connection with an FTP client running on your computer so you can access it from the road. But what a VPN does is creates a virtual link between your computer and you (virtual private network). It essentially tricks your computer into thinking that you are on the same network (subnet) as the other computer connected to a private network. I know a program like hamachi (not sure on the spelling) does VPNs so you might try playing with that.

like Admnpower said, it's just a simple protocol which which allow you to access other network(s) and it's resources.
There must be a VPN server on the network you are accessing for that to work

Would i be correct in assuming this would be a safe way for setting up remote software for say a dental office with remote access?
I was using Primedius webtunnel but for email and setting up a private server for access for family and pictures from previous cruises. Primedius has discontinued for what ever reason. I found a vpn i might be interested in. Any suggestions? |
