Default no sound

xp home.
I had built computer about 7 yrs ago for my wife. the sound was working fine but i installed some special hardware related to a viking sewing machine.
the hardware was a dongle. the software works fine related to the dongle but i lost the sound. Ive checked device manager and found an issue with Media ac 97 audio device. i deleted and asked it to auto detect the drivers. it did. the speakers still don't work. in device manager i still have the yellow.
Any suggestions.

this dongle crap has happened in the past.
I ain't got a clue.
thanks............
