If your laptop has a mini-PCI card for the wireless, you should be able to change it out for a newer wireless card. Although since it's a 4 year old laptop, it may not have the ability to be upgraded.

so what do you think my options are?

it has usb 1.1, and i was thinking to get usb 2.0 cardreader and convert it over and then get a wireless usb network adapter. is this my best option?

thx omega.

If you only have USB 1.1 ports then you are stuck with that unless you get a USB 2.0 expansion card for your card slot (not card reader). Then you can use a USB 2.0 WiFi adapter, which would be your best bet.
