Default Ubuntu Gaming

I have Windows XP and do a lot of heavy gaming, but I was interested in ubuntu because of how user friendly and efficient it seems. But if I were to switch to Ubuntu or some other distro of Linux, would I still be able to play games on that OS? Or would I be better off sticking with Windows?

Also how would my GPUs work out with Ubuntu, I have two 7900s in SLI. And would I be able to transfer my music, games, and word proccessor files to ubuntu?

Thanks.

Ideally, you would want to keep XP for gaming. You can dual-boot though so you have both OS's at your disposal.

Yes, your GPU's will work with Ubuntu.

You have a few options as far as your current files go. The first is to just keep them on your Windows partition. The second is to completely redo your partitioning table and create your own personal partition for all your files. This would involve backing up all your current files, deleting XP, making custom partitions on your disk, then reinstalling everything. It only sounds bad, it's quite easy, but admittedly, a bit time-consuming.

there are a few programs that will allow you to game in ubuntu but their performance is iffy at best. Stick with XP for gaming, but check out Ubuntu just to get some back ground in linux. Very worth it.

Dual boot would be your best bet if you want to have the best of both worlds.
Ubuntu gaming is difficult. As stated above, apps such as wine allow you to run windows programs but these tend to be buggy, selective (often simply choose not to work :???, and slow.

You could try America's Army 2.5. Great community, but it's slowly dropping.

Unreal tournmanet 2004 is ported for linux
Other then that, stick with windows for games. You can run some games on linux with wine, but only a few. here is a list of games that run on ubuntu with wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/
You can also pay for cedega, which is a lot more stable then wine.
Also, if you have an ATI card, leave gaming in linux out of the picture. ATI hasn't caught on yet that developing decent drivers for there cards in linux would help them sell cards. nVidia on the other hand has fairly nice drivers for linux and that's the sole purpose in why so many linux users perfer nvidia cards.

the whole point of gaming on linux was going well, but don't know what happen along the way and we see very few good titles on linux, i think it will be best dual boot, instead of getting headache with wine

Yes, just install Ubuntu and it will install GRUB at the very end. GRUB will let you choose what to load each time.

Just as a note, GRUB is a bootloader, and it will get installed automatically when ubuntu gets installed, so don't worry about installing it. Just create some empty space on your hard drive. If you dont have a partitioning tool in windows, the ubuntu install cd has gparted built in.
