what type of device is this? PCI or some sorta adapter plug? Check for documentation of the manufactures website.

Sounds like BIOS hangs on detecting the device.

I assume you have no IDE headers on your mobo. you could buy an PCI IDE card

No i just didnt want the IDE cable in my case

Its a small PCB that plugs into the CD drive with a power cable and sata on the other end of it

i don't know because i dont have it in front of me. sorry i cant help you if you dont give more info about the device(name, number, manufacture). if its just a pcb with connectors and no "computer chip" on the pcb it won't work. PATA and SATA are different protocals not just connector sizes. the data has to be translated some how.

Again: Check for documentation of the manufactures website.

My guess would be that you don't have the correct jumper settings. IDE uses jumpers to determine what device is where, where SATA does not use jumpers. I am assuming you must be on either Cable Select or Master jumper wise on the IDE drive for it to work.
