First I'd like to say I'm posting this from a laptop and YES the connection from my monitor (for desktop computer) to the computer is connected.
Ok...so I think my computer overheated. I'm not sure but it was shutting itself off before...did it a few times. So I decide to look and it's all dusty in there. I clean the dust out being careful. Turn computer back on and it's still doing it....this time it shuts off and I smell something...sorta like burning dust. Ok...clean again... turn it on and the computer starts up...the fans, etc. but the monitor doesnt turn on...no beeping noise like I usually get either. I tried a new video card, removed the memory, removed every thing basically and it still doesn't work. And now the only way I can shut it off is by turning the power supply switch off. I can no longer turn off the computer by pushing the power button in for 10 seconds. My power supply is an Ultra X-Finity 600 watt... I don;t think that's the problem. I'm thinking the motherboard is fried...but would the internet port still light up if the ethernet cable is connected? I don't know...please help. |

No matter if any lights come up, I think something burned...
Track down the burned part, and I'd say replace it. I would not rurn on the computer for now. Track down the damaged part and replace it as soon as possible. I'd suggest testing each part individually...

if it was over heating you should take out your RAM and your video card and reseat them into the motherboard again. If your system was getting hot some needed components could have come loose via thermal dynamics. I have seen this happen before.

to be fair, a lot of times the burning smell can just be that thermal stuff (pink looking stuff) they pour all over the components to keep them safe. However, a burning smell is NEVER a good smell.

I think it was just the smell of the dust touching something hot. That's what it smelled like.
I don't visually see anything burned or something that could be wrong so....should I just buy a new motherboard? I want the one I have now but can't find it anywhere... a Gigabyte GA-81945P-G Is there something out there like it? Last edited by dirtbagz89; 11-29-2007 at 11:26 PM. |

... I'd get a motherboard with good specs... but with a good return warranty... I'd buy through Newegg, as they have the money back thing...
Don't buy a cheap one. Avoid as much as necessary: Asrock, ECS, PC Chips, Jetway
