Question Ubuntu (gutsy gibon 7.10) error message need aid

Hey,
im new to Ubuntu, while installing java6 i think an error occurred which forced me to close it down. Assuming no biggie i could just reinstall it after a reboot. I get this message.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

So after an hour of frustration i gave up and was like eh who needs it anyways. Only to learn that every program i try to install now i get this same message....

I don't understand what to do to fix the issue?

Umm... 'dpkg --configure -a'

How are you installing Java? Do you know about Ubuntu Restricted Extras?

I think im just gonna do a fresh install and try not to screw it up again....B(

*note when you type that code into the terminal is says "error super user privilege required"

Well, whenever 'super user' is required, all you need to do is put 'sudo' before the command. So, in this case, 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' (without quotes), then enter password and you're good to go.

Sudo is like an 'instant Admin' for Linux, and prevents logging in as Root to make major changes.

For 7.10, it's best if you use the Point-and-Click if you're new to it. APPLICATIONS>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. At the top-right corner, select 'All available Applications' and let it reload. Select 'Other' on the left side of the screen, and scroll all the way down. 'Ubuntu Restricted Packages' is the 6th or 7th one up from the bottom. Check the box, then Apply, then OK. It's butter from there

I thought sudo was only if you already used the su root prefix?

IMSATI: Thank you for your advice, i feel this is much easier. My only concern would be why is that "package" rated with only 1 star?
Does this mean its not coded well and will cause issues or is inefficient?

Sorry, i have many questions and some may appear very dumb, but tis how you learn....

Nope sudo supercedes that.

Sudo will grant complete access to your system though, so, say you 'sudo nautilus'...you have complete control over every file... be careful

Glad I could make it easy for ya

As far as 1-star goes...simple answer: the Package contains formats that may be Copyrighted in some countries, hence 'illegal' to install Whatever... Basically, it's a 'hey, be careful' deterrent. It;s coded perfectly You may need to install some things from Mediabuntu as well to make sure all standard formats play (.avi, .mp3, etc.). Either Google it, or head to UbuntuForums.org and search for it.

On a side-note, PM me if you need any help with installing all the packages for the standard formats (DVD player, codecs, and whatnot). Heading to bed in a few minutes, so may not get to you until some time tomorrow, but I'll give you the low-down
