Good things about Linux (Ubuntu):
- Nice animation. I disklike the way Vista windows close down (pushing away from the top, as if falling over backward = sex/getting laid? ). I love the way Gnome windows close down (pushing away from the bottom, almost like bowing away).- Very easy on the hard disk. I can see my laptop HD lasting 3X longer if I do the bulk of my "work" on Linux. Also easy on USB HD's. - Love the customizable themes/fonts/icons, etc. Bad things about Linux: - gedit (UTF-8) text files are incompatible with MSDOS programs (ANSI). - no audio enhancement (ie. SRS Audio Sandbox). - Avi video & audio are slightly out of synch, even with VLC media player. - Flash does not work on Opera (my most favorite browser). Any suggestions to overcome those problems?

The audio issue, I am not sure. Google it, check out sourceforge, and Linux centric forums. I bet there is some sort of alternative. There usually is. My video files play fine, I suspect lesser quality encoding. No sync issues here. Have you updated and installed the newest version of the flash plug in for your browser? Try firefox and see if that works. |

Forget what I wrote earlier. LeafPad is what I needed to use to emulate NotePad.
Opera works with flash now... Something about Opera unable to use certain new protocols in the new flash... So I found a slightly older version. VLC still has slight issues synching audio with video. Maybe I should go watch another movie on it to make sure it was not an encoding problem, though the same file plays fine in Media Player Classic under Windows. Another thing, I found that VLC -> Audio -> Equalizer -> Party was the closest resemblance to SRS Audio Sandbox for deep bass. Happy happy happy Linux user... ![]()

Ya, they implemented something new in the current flash version, so that Opera, along with Konqueror won't be able to play flash. Anyways, I already found an older version of flash 9, which works with Opera. Otherwise, if I want the current version of flash to work with Opera, I'll have to wait until the next alpha version of Opera becomes a stable release...

in Text Editor, Save As -> (at the bottom) Character Encoding -> Add/Remove -> look for something with WINDOWS next to it.
Flash is always hard to implement into linux but it is possible. Google can give you a nice tutorial. Make sure you have the proper codecs installed -> apps -> add/remove
