Default problem with new monitor

I bought my dad an Acer 19in Lcd monitor and it just arrived today. Well, I hooked it up to my computer to make sure it worked and there were no dead pixels. It would not display the picture when it was hooked up to the vga connection, it said no signal. It worked fine with the dvi connection. The only type of connection my dad has on his computer is vga.

Is there something I have to do to the video card to switch to vga on my computer? Do you think it will work on his since the connection he has is vga? I am hoping it will show up on his.

Did you reboot after switching from DVI to VGA?

Also, the monitor should have an input switch button, like a TV or any other display with more than one input.

No I did not restart and I did not see any switch on the monitor. Well, I wasn't really looking for one either.

Most monitors either have a "source" or "input" button, it should be switched to VGA. That may be the problem.

make sure you hook the monitor up when the computer is shut down

The computer was not off when I hooked it up. I didn't think it had to be. At least I know not to do that again. Do you think I could have damaged anything?

I will look again but I did not see any kind of switch. I don't think my monitor has one either but I could be wrong.

It probably didn't damage anything. But the computer MUST be off for it to work.

Well then why would it work when I hooked it up through DVI? Or does it have to be off just for VGA to work?

The computer doesn't have to be off to switch monitors. It has to be off to switch from DVI to VGA. The monitor you were using before was hooked up with DVI; that's why it let you switch. Just shut down and then hook the new one up with VGA.
