Default Windows Vista is lagging

I made a new system and put high end equipment in it, except for the graphics card. I put in my Radeon 9250 PCI, so I can't run Aero Flass on Vista. I installed the mohterboard and video drivers, but my entire computer lagged down. When I move my mouse it lags. It takes 7 seconds to open upa program. What can be the problem?

Vista is a unapologetic resource hog, so what was "high end" under XP, is now not so much under Vista. How much RAM do you have? What are the specs of the machine you built?

My grandparent's new laptop(Athlon X2 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6100) tends to lag a fair amount in Vista. It tends to feel slower than my Averatec(Sempron) listed below! As mentioned, Vista's simply a buggy resource hog. It's the next Windows ME
