Default Cell Phone Question

My step dad just recently (Today) bought a replacement phone for the one he broke that he's had for years.

Samsung m610

My question is:
How do I get music onto this damn thing? I mean, you take the battery out to put a small card into an area which golds music, pictures, etc.
I plugged in the USB cord, etc, and it prompts with that "found new hardware", so I click to install it in which it says, "Cannot install the Hardware"

So.. All I want is to get music on here to use as ring tones for him. Is this model not able to do that?
The internet access on the phone won't even work for downloading from 3gforfree or anything..

Edit: Don't tell me to read the book, I have a few times on the Music spots and it's not helping.

I know with my Nokia, I stuck the music on the "small card" (assuming you mean an SD card of sorts) and it picked it all right up. I can also zip files over to it using Bluetooth.

You copy them over just like anything else. My phone uses a miniSD/Transflash card that comes with a converter so I may use it in a standard SD Card reader. I slap the card in there and drag the music files over. With my Nokia, directory structure does not matter, it just plays whatever it can find.

Oh.. a reader.
I'm guessing the reader is a USB device?

For me, I use a MicroSD memory slot card, which is the size of an SD card, but with a MicroSD slot, then I put that into an adapter, that goes to my computer via USB.

You can find readers for dirt cheap anymore. Or check your cameras and such. Most of my cameras use SD cards and work as card readers when connected by USB.

Ooooh... so just use my camera's card slot and get music onto it that way?

EDIT: Just tried.. it won't let me drag files over to it.

Typically, yes. Not all will work like this, but most do. If you can access the memory card through My Computer as another drive(typically seeing DCIM, then your camera's directory) it's working as a standard "mass storage device".
