troubleshooting... budget build.

i plugged everything in the way its supposed to, integrated video+audio... c2d processor etc...

no video response, no beeps. i will try making sure the case speaker is plugged in correctly but im 90% sure i did the first time using the motherboards instructions.

EDIT: i think it MAY be short circuiting, i didnt use any insulators beneath the motherboard screws. do you think this may be the problem? if so where can i buy the required insulators? circuit city? radio shack?

If there is no hardware defects like a bad board try unplugging the four wire 12v cpu feed and only lightly replugging it back into the board to see if there's a loose contact in the plug. Bad Board? Or Simply A Need To Replug? I saw that problem when simply swapping supplies on the last build where at first the supply itself looked the problem on a working system.

You mean standoffs? If you didn't put those on, most likely your motherboard is fried.

You never secure a board down on the flat plate seen in a case. But sometimes you have to put non conductive washers underneath the board if something is touching a standoff other then the silver colored area surrounding the holes for the fasteners. Then a board will ground out.

Hopefully you didn't get a board from a bad batch. That happened to a friend on a new build last year where the vendor sent out the 3rd board after the first were doa. When he selected a different model the system powered right up. Once that was seen the first two were shipped back for the credit then.

the case didnt come with standoffs like it said, however the holes which you screw the board into were raised up from the rest of the motherboard holder so i figured the insulators were built into it. i'll have to find out where to buy them if i cant find any lying around.

If they were metal, they might've somehow shorted. Probably it isn't though. If it included no standoffs and it just had raised metal parts, and your motherboard shorted out, it's the case manufacturer's fault...

Usually you will find a small packet of fasteners that come along with the board itself. The dark brown washers there will work since those are made of a non conductive material. The awkward part is trying to get them to stay on top of each standoff or preformed standoffs in the case there.

You really don't want to use any type of glue while some type of transparent tape you can peel free once the fastening screws are started allows you to punch a small hole to see each one held on long enough. If there's a problem will a non ground portion of the board touching that will remedy that fast. Otherwise you are looking at rmaing the board for replacement, exchange, or refund while you pay to ship it back if the board has bad caps or another defect.

yea i think im going to simply RMA the board, im sick of cases + motherboards not coming with the correct screws, standoffs, insulators etc...

As far as securing the board itself I find it odd that you are missing the bag of fasteners that are generally seen with boards. With an old Socket A build here the board wouldn't fire up until seeing the washers underneath as well as on top.

Stand offs are usually seen in the packet the case comes with unless 'open box" where someone returned it and forgot to toss that in with it when returning it. "Used" means just that there. The board simply comes with the fastening screws and washers along with a few other things.
