I have a question and don't have a clue.
I have instant messenger showing up in the system tray. Its not a big deal but would like to address it. i used kill the messenger for years and its popping up again. I went to msconfig and disabled it and its still disabled. restart and its still there. the only way to get rid of it is right click then exit. (only until the next reboot though. Ive never used messenger before and doubt if i ever will. Any suggestions? thanks tremmor |

For AIM, I believe you have to go into it's settings and un-check the 'start when Windows starts' or whatever it's labeled. It's like MSIE or Real Player in the sense that it will check to see if it's enabled by default. Unless it's unchecked it will keep loading at Startup.
Ever consider using a cross-plaform IM program like Gaim or Pidgin?

Sooo...do you use an IM program?
Go to START>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Do you see AIM? Can you Right Click on it in the Quick Start area and go into the Settings to disable it starting on Boot?

There's several places that programs launch from at startup, so I would check all these:
1) In Messenger goto Tools -> Options -> Preferences -> Uncheck "Run Messenger when Windows Starts" 2) See if there's an entry in the Startup Folder of the Start Menu: Start -> Programs -> Startup 3) There a couple Registry Keys that start programs automatically: Start -> Run -> type "regedit" and press Enter Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and look for an entry from MSNMGR -> delete it (only delete the single entry, not the whole "Folder". Also look for the same key under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run and delete it also if it is there.
