Default Linux Boot Disk

How can i make a Linux boot disk? I was goven a computer thats worth nothing to play around with and see if i can find oa use for it. Ive been wanting to try Linux, so i think this is my oportunity. If i download the boot thing on another computer, how can i put it on a disk to boot on my new (or really old??) computer. Also, whats steps do i take with the disk to boot linux (using XP now) . Like do i format before or is that in the process of booting linux? Thanks in advance.

Well if you want to try linux you can download Ubuntu for free, no trials
then download InfraRecorder
On InfraRecorder Go to Actions> Burn Image
Choose you Ubuntu Download and burn it
You can try it straight from cd without using HDD space or you can install it later

check in your settings for a thing about network connections and see if your Ethernet connection is listed

I forgot im using a wireless usb thing. The connection is listed with about 2 of my neighbors, but mine doesnt work. I click it and it seems like its trying to connect, but then it stops and goes back to how it was before. And im not hte same computer now with XP, so its not the wireless things fault.

What is the model of said wireless device? I've had to configure mine manually, including compiling the driver so I could get it to work.
