Burning DVD problems

I have tried making a DVD but it turned out quite badly. Firstly, what I want to burn to the DVD is a series in episodes, all about 180mb. I did a sort of test burn to see if it worked. And I tried just burning one episode and when it burned onto the DVD it was over 1gb in size and was in 2 parts and the sound was badly out of sync.

The files are avi files and I'm using dvdSanta with Vista.

I use nero but sometimes Cucusoft avi to cd,dvd converter.
