It really depends on what you want to do.
You can have both yes, that wil be good, so you can actually know which softwares work on vista or not.
To conclude, it's really up to you , are you a gamer ?
Right now my personal view wud be XP

Any way you look on, XP is better solution. Vista is for people who prefer estetics and don't really care is it compatible to work on it. Donno. I keep getting bad impressions about Vista.

Pff who says Vista is future? If too many people ( like now ) complain about it, Gates will soon start to create another OS.
But the thing is, right now I'd rather use Linux or Ubuntu than Vista. Please, do not get angry on this ( Vista fans ) as I will upgrade to Vista Ultimate as soon as final release is released.
But till then... XP Professional SP2 (I'm even not sure should I upgrade to SP3, I have doubts hh)

yeah you do have a point regarding the future but not so many people can upgrade right now due to budget or hardware and stuff.
On topic, the OP must decide if it's VIsta or XP, but likei said its all down to what he does really

It depends, Vista supports DX10 while XP doesn't (as of now), so gamers won't have much of a choice in the near future.
