Not picky on 32 bit or 64 bit so much, but I'm building a new computer and really don't want Vista, and also think that $90 on Newegg for XP is a ripoff...

The OEM release of XP Pro 64bit has been seen for about $50-$52- when searching around. The $90 price at newegg is about average for XP Home or Pro 32bit full install OEM disks for system builders. Retail sees even higher!
XP upgrade disks also come in around the same price range surprising enough. Some places like seen at amazon see $191.43 for the retail version of XP Home while another place sees it OEM for only $82.99 as seen at http://www.viosoftware.com/Windows+X...df5643c90d47cb

Nice price, lousy vendor, IMHO. Every time I ordered something from Vio -- XP OEM, also Nero 6 Ultra Suite, and CyberLink PowerDVD 6 OEM -- they were always out of stock and/or backordered, no matter what the ad said. I got mad and went elsewhere, (Royaldiscount.com) even though it cost me more.
Unfortunately, every other place now wants $93 and up ![]()

Another place called directsoftware is where I found XP Pro for about $80 OEM a few years back. The link there came up during the search at this time while not going over every link listed. The shopping site nextag listed that price upto about more then you would want to consider in that sense!
The links here are simple results from using the search term "xp oem" since no one version is specified in order to see which editions are seeing what prices. Calibrex as well as nextag brought me right back to the $82.99 price for the lowest except if xp pro 64 is specified. That would likely see a price under $60 at this time. http://www.nextag.com/xp-oem/search-html http://www.calibex.com/oem-xp/zzcali...0--search-html Want another surprise? Try finding the full retail package of XP Pro 64bit for $87.95 as seen at http://www.cietdirect.com/product_special_detail.php?s=1&id=163&OVRAW=xp%20p ro%2064&OVKEY=xp%20pro%2064&OVMTC=standard&OVADID= 899774521&OVKWID=74943812521 That's a bargain when you compare that price to what was found for a new oem disk on EBay! http://cgi.ebay.com/MICROSOFT-WINDOW...sid=p1638.m118

The 64bit platform in the long run will be more stable and open up some new doors for programming, gaming, etc. there. At the present time it's simply now starting to get noticed since Vista's release. The games, apps, drivers are still primarily for the 32bit verions.
The move upto 64bit from 32 will be seen in the next few years following the next version of Windows when Microsoft plans to halt producing 32bit editions all together. One comparison would be looking going from 95 16bit to 98 32bit where 98 offered more while being looked at as a slower version at the time with people then waiting to see drivers come out like with any new version. Microsoft hasn't keep up too much with the drastic faster paced changes seen in hardwares. Most running the 64bit releases at this time do so simply to run 4gb of memory and see more then the 3gb barrier common with 32bit. Actual performances vary depending on the system you have.

You could try a Linux Operating system since they are much cheaper. But my Linux Ubuntu 7.10 Operating System doesn't have a graphics user interface (I can't play my favorite video games). I can browse the internet and do most things a Microsoft Windows Operating System can do.

Linux also saw a 64bit distro at one point. The main drawback with Linux of course while being an open source OS seeing improvement in each new release of a distro is being based on the old UNIX type platform. Stability? "Far better" over Windows without hesitation there! Flexibility like gaming with MS type games? Virtual machines mainly if you can get one running good.
