Default 8600GT upgrade, no boot

the Athlon 64 System in my sig had a geforce 6600 in it. I recently purchased an XFX Geforce 8600GT as an upgrade. when i put it in, the computer POSTs fine and begins loading either of my OS's, but they both stop in mid boot. the Ubuntu flash screen shows and locks while the XP splash screen never shows at all. i cant even get a live cd of linux to boot, it also gets stuck at the splash screen.

when i put the 6600 back in it boots both OS's fine. bios is up to date, both OS's were cleaned of old drivers. any other ideas? thanks!
