Default nvidia vs. ati(need for new computer)

i need to know which is better for me.
should i go with the ati hd 3870 for $280 or the nvidia 8800gts 512 for $340 which runs slower than the ati.

also, which would be more compatible for a ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus LGA 775 MOBO?

I would get the 8800gt. It runs faster than the 3870(according to tomshardware) and it is about the same price.

EVGA 8800GT

The 8800gt is a good card, almost a peer of the GTX. Also the specs of a card can't be accurately used to deduce performance over another, unless the two card being compared are of the same family, for example G80. That the 8800gts has less impressive specs doesn't mean it's performance will be likewise, on the contrary, the GTS is the better card.

Both an ATI or a Nvidia card will be equally compatible with that motherboard, with any motherboard for that matter.

What's the new GTS comparable to, the GTX?

Yeah, pretty close. I think it even manages to beat it by a modest amount in Oblivion. Other games it directly compares, or is just a couple frames behind.

and how far behind is the 8800GT? is it worth that extra $40 to get the GTS over the GT??

8800GT > HD3870 slightly

8800GTS > 8800GT > HD3870

8800GTX > 8800GTS barely

And i'm only considering the 512mb GTS.

I wouldn't bother wasting money on the GTS unless you have it, the 8800GT is an awesome card, there is obvious gains with the GTS, but they aren't extraordinary.

i went for the 3870 over the 8800GT. Due to the price difference from the 3870 and GTS, that just depends on if you can spend $100 more on the (G92) GTS.
