a couple basic questions

hey guys, i have never overclocked a system and im not sure if i ever will, but i have noticed that more and more people seem to be doing it so i have some questions, why is it becoming so popular? why would people be doing it on brand new systems? sry if you guys get annoyed with questions like this but i would like to learn everything i can about computers because i think that sometime soon you will not be able to do anything without computer knowledge, thanks in advance for the help.

The main point is you can buy a cheaper model processor and overclock it to same performance of a higher priced model. Plus its kinda like free horse power

lots of people do it becuase the is almost no risk anymore, if your sensible

how can you tell if it is going to be stable or not?

You'll know if its not stable-lockups, windows errors. If you raise your CPU voltage to get a higher clock just make sure you keep a eye on your temps.
