Default can someone explain SPDIF

my laptop (HP dv9000) two headphone jacks, and one is sabled SPDIF. i know it has something to do with high def audio, but i cant really find any documentation on it. can someone explain what exactly its for, what kind of cables are needed, and what devices can make use of it?

spdif is digital out---

like coaxial, i am just using my spdif to connect to my sound system-just using a coaxial audio lead

what does the head look like? my computer just has a normal looking a 3.5mm jack. the cables ive seen dont look like they'd fit.

you mean SPDIF on my lappy? no, i think its a stock feature. i didnt order it as an extra.

Well yea spdf is like a coaxial its like digitel out and it is also used for plugging cable t.v ....
