Default SATA2 configurations

I had replace my old spec yesterday with new mobo GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3
,2*Kingston 1gb DDR2,Hitachi 160 Gb SATA2 hdd and a new power supply.Everything runs fine when the first boot screen,hdd,memory,cpu,....all detected. The problems is when i try to boot the Partition Magic 8.0 with diskette,i cannot format the hard drive. The error message of "cannot format the drive #108 error occured".The drive showed in the list also label with 108 error.Consequently i try the XP bootable diskette to start a new setup and format (I DON'T HAVE THE BOOTABLE ONE )It works fine and till the final setup ,though it haven't complete yet(i got to work and force to turn it off)Is it relevant to the SATA2 controller configurations or any necessary hdd drivers needs to install before format the drive?
