Default running CHKDSK

Hello.
I'd like to run chkdsk on an external hard drive. I know this is a bonehead question but what do I type to run it?

I know enough to go to start/run menu to get cmd prompt.

Thanks!

from the command prompt. chkdsk /f (this switch will fix errors)

you can also see which switches are available by typing any command
as chkdsk/?

I neglected to mention that this harddrive is from my old computer. It has windows 2000 on it. windows was having trouble booting up. it probably has a corrupted file and all it needs is for CHKDSK to repair the errors.

I took the hard drive out and placed it in a hard drive enclosure. I can see all my stuff. Can I run chkdsk on it without affected my other pc? Will the computer become confused when it sees an older version of windows on it?

Thanks

yeau....but i doubt if that will fix your problem.
you likely will be able to copy and backup anyway.
