K today i just bought a new vid card for my bro's old comp and for some reason it works well from boot up to loading xp logo but after everything is loaded. The screen turns black.... Anyone know why? I keep retrying and retrying and same event happens... Everything seems to work fine from boot up to loading screen but won't show in window screen.
Heres the card i bought. His PSU is 250w with 14A at 12v http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130295

If it was a newer model seeing dual vga ports the problem would be simply replugging the monitor into the primary port instead of the secondary. The black screen instead of desktop is typical there. The old FX5200 model is apparently not detecting the monitor there for some reason. Some older cards were more or less crt not lcd ready if an lcd is in use there.

The power supply should be enough for that card unless it's failing. My guess is some conflicting video drivers. If you can try going into the BIOS and disabling onboard video. If that doesn't work, try booting into safe mode and disabling the onboard video through the device manager.

One idea would be to see if the same thing is seen when booting into safe mode. That should tell whether old drivers, onboard, or some problem detecting the monitor is being seen there.
A fault being seen with the drivers for the card itself can also cause problems. When finishing a new build here with the card seeing dual vga ports both ports were tried when the black screen was being seen instead of the desktop. Later the next Catalyst version cleaned up that problem since the drivers on the disk were the same as the failed 7.9 version of ATI's Catalyst and driver set.

Hey, here's an original thought... maybe it's the display drivers! You might want to try booting into safe mode!

Being that the card is an older model it probably lacks support for the 1280x1024 if an lcd is in use there. Another thing to look is what the voltage requirement for the card is. That and reviewing the FaQs section at EVGA like typing in "no display" will provide some guidelines there for troubleshooting. http://www.evga.com/support/knowledgebase/

Of course it does. Why is that even an issue/being mentioned?
Anyways it is initializing the PCI first, on boot, then goes back to the onboard adapter once it hits windows. Go into safe mode and disable the onboard adapter, then try it. Once it's in Windows, and the screen goes black, you'll know if I'm right if you try plugging the monitor into the onboard VGA. |
