Default external hd question

how do they work? is it just for storage or can you put say a game on it and run it without transferring to your laptop?

cpu-intel e8400 @3.00ghz p4 2.0ghz
memory- 4gb corsair 800 mhz 512 mb ram
hdd- 500 gb western digital
psu- 700 ocz
video- evga 8800gt
speakers- logitech 5.1 X130
dvd- lite on 20x
os-vista home premium

if anybody has any input on the left column thats what i want to get right now.

They are best used for storage. If you install something on it, it probably wont work on another computer uness it doesn't use the registry.

Of course. but ya have to remember it mounted on mostly a usb. (slower). it was made for backing up pictures or system and will serve you well.

no. sata is faster but a few bucks more. Honestly i bought a case a sata drive but don't see it as faster. it was a 200 gig sata. but a usb2 is only so fast. Others would know if it made a diffidence. i do incidental backups and walk away. come back and its done.

eSATA is different. If the drive you are looking at is eSATA make sure your computer supports it. If it's the drive interface (ie the enclosure is USB) then it doesn't matter, USB is slower than both.
