Default Deskstar T7K500

I bought a 320 gig Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 16mb sata 2, instead of buying the raptor 74gig. I was going to get the 320gb western digital 16mb but that one was out of stock. Is the Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 good for the OS? what do you guys rekon?

Hitachi deathstars are good for nothing. They have a reputation of dying. Hence the deathstar name.

Hitachi is about the worse drives I (use to) install as far myself and customers bringing back because of harddrive failures. I just use W/D and Seagate now and have had good luck with both, About 80% W/D and 20% Seagates in builds.

I figure, in the last ten years, I've seen several thousand harddrives. Either sold them, used them or serviced them. From best to worst they ranked as follows:

WD Raptor and RE
Quantum Fireball
Maxtor Diamond Max (not the 8 or Fireball 3)
Seagate Barracuda
Samsung T-series
Western Digital Caviar
Hitachi
Fujitsu
Connor

The last four are really close. Connor is now gone, Fujitsu doesn't really factor in the desktop equation anymore, Hitachis are just plain crap and every single corrupt or dead harddrive I've repaired lately (at least one a week) is a Western Digital Caviar.

So are Western Digital Caviar RE hard drives good or poor quality?

i'm using a 2+ year old deckstar with no problems.
i also have a 60 gig ibm deckstar [6+ years] also with no problems.

the deathstar was coined for the ibm drives that failed resulting in the ibm hd buyout by hitachi.

hitachi's are fast and good.

The REs are good (except that they don't get along with certain backplane/RAID controller combos). The SEs are only good with light duty applications.
