i have a 320 gb external hard drive that is not working right. i think i downloaded a virus but am not sure. i cannot access the harddrive and an error message comes up (I/O device issue or somthing) there is no way to get in to it. also when i attach the ehd and look for it in my computer it says not responding and everything slows down and not responds's's's's. as soon as i yank the cable out the computer returns to normal functioning. i just want to access the harddrive to get my 200gb of music, movies and other stuff off. WHAT DO I DO, please help ASAP.

Plug it into another computer and check if it's actually working. Obviously try all the other usb/firewire ports just in case too. Does it sound different? Is it spinning up?

Viruses in general do nothing. They slow up the computer a bit, but windows firewall is all I use and it's easilly enough unless you're on suspect sites all the time. P2P sharing software mucks up my computer a bit too, best to keep away from them.

I doubt it's a virus causing your problems though...

i downloaded 3 movies p2p and tryed to copy and paste them to the hard drive, about halfway thru pasting them a warning on the toolbar came up and it told me that it didnt work and to retry pasting it on the hd. if i deleted those movies from my documents could that make somehow fix the problem, maybe its a virus that doesnt let you read harddrives. it did read my ipod though.
