Default Laptop Battery Broke?

I have a Compaq 2100 series laptop, When running on battery power the screen goes dim and the processor runs considerably slower regardless of level of battery power remaining., I've ran the battery check and the pc and it says the battery is ok, I would like to know if the battery might still be bad or is there another area I should check first before dumping $100 on a new battery? I had used this laptop in Iraq and noticed that laptop batteries do not perform as well as they should due the heat, Could that have permanently damaged my battery?

What you might do is put the battery in the freezer for a little bit and then give it a good thump... not to hard though to where it might break the case on the battery.
