Has anyone heard of clipping a HDD? I have a laptop 40gb Toshiba HDD that was clipped to 30gb. I don't know what was used to do it but it was not partioned and format doesn't bring back all 40gb. It was clipped because the PC only recognized a max of 30gb HDD and this was a replacement.

Check the back of the drive, there may be a jumper set to limit the drive. If not, it may just be partitioned to 30GB in which case if you delete the partition and recreate it you should be able to use all 40GB. Keep in mind a 40GB drive will be 37GB formatted.

There doesn't seem to be a capacity limitation setting though. If deleting and recreating the partition (as opposed to just formatting) doesn't get the full 37.25GB then I'm not sure what would. Also, I'm assuming your partitioning with a tool/filesystem that supports creating partitions > 32GB.

Ok ya got me on the jumpers but I don't think it would slide into connector or cradle if they were on. All the pins go into a connector on the cradle which is a media bay HDD holder.

I did the diskpart deal to delete partition and volume. Then went into Comp Manage to create and formatting but it only lists 29.90GB just like yesterday.

If supported, you can instruct the firmware to limit the drive, by using some tool
