If you used Ubuntu or indeed any Linux distribution you would not need any antivirus, spyware, reg clean or disk clean utilities.

GAIM and aMSN are MSN messenger alternatives.
Firefox works
There are loads of email clients including Thunderbird.

Personally I would look at Xubuntu for your machine if wanting to use Linux. http://www.xubuntu.org

Minimum system requirements

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 128 MB RAM.

so theres an alternitive for msn that works on other os? but our frinds list still there right? like all friends list from msn are in the alternitive msn?

pretend i have 3 computers.... all connect in same internet network. 2 is windows xp and 1 is xubuntu.... will the computer with xubuntu will work on internet?

does xubuntu have like.... u know when u go to picture folder in xp and it shows thumbnail.... does xubuntu show thumbnail preview as well?

which will be more stable and faster in my computer spec? xubuntu or xp home? will xubuntu have better performance than xp home in my low spec computer?

simon already summed it up, linux Filesystem is not the same as windows.
For your spec, windows won't run, the only OS that probably will is win98/95 but then again installing AV's will screw it up big time.
as far as speed and productivity, for a free OS simon said Xubuntu which uses Xfce, the most simple and lightest desktop manager.

yes just download it online, and it's free, burn it. XUBUNTU
stop looking for excuses, if your cd drive doesn't work get another spare one somewhere (time for a little hardware ).
make sure you boot into the bios and set cd rom first.

cheers mate

In answer to your questions.

There are no known Linux viruses in the wild i.e. you won't get one.
Spyware does not work on linux.
The linux filesystems do not need defragging and there is no messy registry to have to clean up.

If you use a router to connect to the net then you just plug the machine in and it should just work. If you connection share then I'm afraid I don't know.

Installing from a CD is the easiest way, however if you can't use the drive then:

..because, for most people, Windows is the 'easiest to learn'.

With it's self-installing programs and easy to understand file structure, the average user can become acquainted with it a lot easier than Linux.
