Default computer appears to be stuck in diagnostic setup, and is not going out of it :(

i was reading the 'how to speed up my computer' thread and it said about msconfig, which i did, i used the diagnostic startup. however when i restarted my computer it was in the old-school windows format and the theme (windows xp modified) i used before is not there. also there is no internet input, i.e. my wireless is not regerstering in the toolbar (no internet things are)
the first time i tried to set the diagnostic startup the program crashed, could this have done anything? and is there anything i can do to correct this??

yes, the diagnostik startup (also known as Safe Mode) starts up your computer with the absolute basics so that in case some program or some driver is causing problems, you can start seeing where the problem lies (for example by starting them manually one by one). This safe mode is only used to "hunt down" a problem - and it is not meant as a regular mode to use your computer in.

In safe mode, the computer has the old-school look. To stop the computer from always starting in this safe mode, you have to go back to msconfig and then choose the "normal startup".

i have already tried starting it in normal mode, it has the same effect. in safe mode would;
-the internet not work
-my in-built speaker not work
-'help and support' wont work, says i need to turn a service on, but all the services are on.
-and be stuck in old-school windows.
because that is where it is at now. as i said i have restarted it in the normal mode but the same thing happens.

a friend had a simialr problem......he just needed to change his display settings. control panel would be a good place to look as im not sure where they exactly are.

as for your internet....are you wireless.....i know some wifi usb sticks need to be used in the same usb port it is configured to. also maybe you need to reconfigure internet connection settings for example encryption settings if you have encryption (i have needed to do this twice re entering the key as it got reset with some update)

i hope your issue is as simple as this, sorry if this doesnt help but every option is worth a shot. Sometimes the simple options are the ones we all miss.

i have tried all that, thanks though. there is no xp option in the visual settings, and the wireless is built-in. the laptop is not recognising any usb device, or any CD's.
is it worth using the 'product recovery' disk that came with my laptop, i'm not too fussed about loosing files, just want my leptop back lol. i read somewhere that this can happen and the system needs to be restored with the disk that came with the computer. that advice said to remove files and drivers, not sure what it means by drivers, but i cannot as the laptop cannot recognise anything that would let me get data off the laptop.

well thats all my ideas.......you could try asking in internet security section of the forum on the chance you have a nasty. But unless you already have hijackthis or and other of those type of detection applications i dont see that helping as you cannot put anything onto your computer from internet or disc or usb device.

But the guys in that section of the forum really know their stuff so maybe they can help.

Hmm I don't see it as a virus problem. Although you never know, but still...
