It appears to be showing you the size of each core die compared to a penny.

Off topic for a moment, I find it strange that you called it a "penny". That was our old coinage system in the UK in the 70's. I thought a "penny" was only a British term.

No that is completely incorrect. This small copper 1 cent coin in the United States is universally known as a penny.

And this is not off topic. The image is of something involved with the new 45nm Intel CPUs and I would like to know what it is. If I wonder, I am sure there are others out there who are curious as well. Thanks.

He never said it wasn't used for the US 1 Cent coin, he was saying thats what it was called in the 70's in Britain.

Also, I told you what I believe it was, and when he said "off topic for a moment", he meant that his post was going a little off topic.

I misunderstood. So yes, that is funny if that is unknown from Great Britain's, that we use the term penny here in the US.

Because the image above and the link that you have posted are from different locations, I do not know if they are correlated. A photo of a penny and Penryn technology? Possibly a coincidence? I am not sure but thank you.

I have almost no doubt that the above is a picture of a penny on a wafer

the wafer is cut up, and each square thing can become a core, i guess they are just showing the size of the core

i recognize the wafer because i saw one when i took a tour of the intel fab 32
