Default After installing a new OS, how to go about downloading updates?

After installing a new OS, how do you go about downloading updates? It is my understanding that your PC is most vunerable at this point and the next step to keeping your PC safe is to download updates. I have vista OS ultimate and my question is ,do I just go into computer security and enable the windows firewall? Is this enough to keep my system safe?

First thing to do is have all the updated drivers before hand and install them first, then update windows, then install a good Antivirus and antispyware program and yes you can use windows firewall or use a another companys firewall.

Please go to Control Panel and double click on Security Center.
Now, there will be a link to Windows Update, click that, and click on the button labelled, Check For Updates.

Now this is going to take a LONG time, because you have just reinstalled your OS.
Before all of this, please enable your Windows Firewall, this should be sufficient to block obvious intrusion attempts.

your computer is the most vulnerable at that time indeed, however, if you dont surf the web for days and days before doing all that the above mentioned, then you might have a problem hehe
