Default <window root> file missing

My Packard Bell was unable to boot one day, with error msg, "Window was unable to load due to hardware or software changes recently" (something like that). I used a second hard disk to boot the system cos i have misplaced my recovery disc and also not to erase my data. Now that everything running ok except that whenever i opened my old hard disk, it still cant boot but with different error msg, " <window root> /system32/hal.dll is missing, please re-install a copy of it." Can anyone please help me to deal with this? Many thanks

Window XP

Boot of the Xp cd and select repair
At the prompt type bootcfg /list

your boot config will be display
after that type bootcfg /rebuild

doing so will repair you windows boot.ini
now reboot

the only way i can think of which i would do, is put the unbootable hard drive in another pc,insert the xp cd locate hal.dllon the cd, and copy it to the system32 folder on the unbootable hard drive, it should work

seems you are not getting this, you will need the password if you want to fix hal.dll, and you don't need to type "c:/windows/blah blah", it's not needed.
The only way you gonna type the address is if you were copying hal.dll off the cd (via prompt) to the system32 folder.
if you don't have the password you do like i said earlier, its the easiest way and involves no command line, just hardware knowledge
