If it were an old computer and this fell off i would not worry. But since it is a new computer, I would say put it all together, and try it out. the only issues i see arising is maybe a cooling/dust issue. Next time you go to the store grab a new one.. they are like $8-$10.

-My own opinion is you should have it on there, it is there for a reason.

It shoud have come with the motherboard, and if it didn't or if you lost it you should be able to find one on the motherboard manufacturers website. The shield will add a little structural rigidity to the mobo mount (wouldn't worry about dust, think of how much dust is actively being pushed into the case by fans), but my main concern would be the grounding of the mobo connections to the case. Anyone have any insight into if that would be a problem?

Edit: Well, according to this it can be a problem, I'm just not sure how serious.

This problem can be due to soft metal being used in the I/O connector plate or to an insufficient number of spring-finger contacts. A solution is to use a hardened stainless spring steel with a sufficient number of contact points to the I/O connectors and the wall of the system chassis. Each I/O connector housing should have at least two contacts and as a general rule, there should be a contact point at least every 1 cm between the I/O connector plate and the chassis. As a quick remedy if this condition exists, a die-cut, conductive, foam gasket matching the I/O connector pattern can be added to improve connector grounding to the chassis.

Install away, that stupid IO shield isnt critical (hell I rarely install the damn thing) Only potential issues are dust related really

Bah. Does this mean I have to have an IO shield if I run a testbench?

Goto a big store, buy the same motherboard. Grab the IO shield. Return it.

I wouldnt risk doing that as if you open the packaging then the company wont accept a refund your end up with two motherboards.
